I’ve hit a road block, but I’m not blocked – I don’t have writer’s block, I have a process block.
My process, that is my daily practice – my commitment to write 500 words a day – has tripped me up. I’m falling all over myself to write words, but I’m not painting a picture. Instead of losing myself in the story, I’ve gone word huntin’.
While it’s good to read about other authors’ processes, habits, rituals and recommendations – and I think it’s a necessary first step in developing your own author practice – it’s easy to use these tools as a crutch instead of walking your own way.
So, for now, I’m going to lower my weaponry and leave the words to roam in peace. I suspect they’re more likely to come when needed if I shepherd the story without desperation.
